Congratulations to Ms. Chitrini Mozumder, our RS&GIS doctoral student of Dr. Nitin Kumar Tripathi, from the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) on having been awarded two Best Paper Awards during last November. She participated in the 33rd Asian Conference in Remote Sensing (ACRS 2012, 26-30 Nov, 2012, Pattaya, Thailand) and 4th International Conference on Geo-Information Technology for Natural Disaster Management (GIT4NDM 2012, 7-8 Nov, 2012, Colombo, Sri Lanka). Her presented paper titled was "Use of Multiple Satellite Images in multiple scales for feature extraction and image classification: a case study of Ramsar wetland in north east India" in ACRS 2012 and a poster titled " impact of monsoon flooding on a Ramsar wetland in north east India" in GIT4NDM 2012. Ms. Mozumder’s paper won the best student paper award in ACRS 2012 and best poster award in GIT4NDM 2012.

Prof. Obaidullah Obaid, Minister of Higher Education – Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, visits AIT on 1st November 2012 for having discussion on topics of UG Program, PG program and Research collaboration. There are four UG’s programs to be mentioned as priority : Civil&Infra, ICT, Electronic Eng. and Information Technology. The expected number is a hundred being supported by Afghanistan Government from 2013 and of course they will come and begin from bridging program before joining a regular class at AIT. In addition, they are establishing a Faculty of Environment Engineering and also need some support from AIT including course curriculum development and Lab capacity management too. This would lead to be a partnership agreement in near future. Regarding PG, it is under the proposal stage by Ministry of Higher Education to receive funding from World Bank. RS&GIS FoS has accepted to organize Asian Summer School program from 19th - 31st August 2012. The participants are from Chubu University (Japan), Pukyong National University (PKNU, Korea) , Fuzhou University (China), Center for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT, India), University of Alberta, Kasetsart University (Thailand) and AIT will attend lectures on issues related to sustainable development in Asia and lectures on Geoinformatics and its contribution, in order to deepen the awareness on status and issues in Asia where a rapid development is taking place. He will be serving under the organization of INRIA (National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control), Sophia Antipolis, France. His research team is STARS (Spatio-Temporal Activity Recognition Systems) and his project title is "Assessing walking parameters for apathetic patients using RGB-D sensors (e.g. Kinect)".

RS&GIS Expert Seminar Series on Topic: Interferometry SAR (IFSAR) for Thailand by David Hisdal, Vice President Asia & Australia, Intermap Technologies Inc., was held at RS&GIS Seminar Room (W208) Academic Building from 2 pm ~ 3 pm yesterday 28th February 2012. Intermap Technologies have wide experience in using IFSAR for DEM generation. David prepared to discuss the technical nature of his IFSAR, the advantages of a hybrid product and some ideas on how it can be used to create a national framework for risk assessment and management. A high level delegation from United Group of Institutions, India visited Remote Sensing and GIS Lab on Thursday, 3rd February 2011 to see the educational and research facilities. The delegation comprised of Dr. Jagdish Gulati, President, UGI; Dr. A.B. Sammaddar, Advisor, UGI; Mr. Satpal Gulati, Vice President and Mr. Gaurav Gulati, Director, UGI. Dr. Taravudh explained them the role of RS&GIS in development and course offerings and possible collaborations. Dr. Nitin K. Tripathi, Coordinator, Associate Professor, Dr. Taravudh Tipdecho and team from RS&GIS/SET visited officially to Agricultural Land Reform Office (ALRO) and met Deputy Secretary-General Werachai Narkwiboonwong (AIT-Alumni MSc-1986 Human Settlements and Development) for AIT Promotion and give presentation to ALRO’s staff on 04 January 2010, Monday. The visit shows more positive with ALRO’s scholarship for 2011 as a result. We do appreciate and thanks to Miss Rujee Rodcha (Doctoral student from RS&GIS) for her supports in the morning visit. After that in the afternoon, Dr. Nitin K. Tripathi, Dr. Taravudh Tipdecho and team visited to Royal Thai Survey Department, as also for AIT Promotion and had presentation to some interested groups who willing to continue MEng / PhD at AIT. The visit was "Marvelous" to say talking closely to them and we came to know the specific requirements from them for their further study at AIT. On 21 November 2006, Prof. Said Irandoust, President of AIT, received Mr. Rudolf W. Matindas (left), Head of National Coordinating Agency for Surveys and Mapping (BAKOSURTANAL), Indonesia accompanied by 9 staff members. Joining the meeting were Dr. Nitin Tripathi, Associate Professor, SET/RS&GIS; Prof. Seishiro Kibe, Visiting Professor, SET/RS&GIS; and Mr. Kyaw Soe Hlaing, Alumni Relations Coordinator, ERCO.The purpose of the visit was to explore and discuss possible collaboration between BAKOSURTANAL and AIT. Mr. Matindas expressed willingness for flexible masters and doctoral programs as well as conducting short trainings courses for Bakosurtanal and other GIS/ Remote Sensing related organizations in Indonesia. During November 4 ~ 6, 2005, DMAI '2005 International Workshop on Disaster Monitoring & Assessment through Images was held in the Auditorium of AIT Centre, jointly organized by eight working groups of International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping (CASM) and Asia GIS Association (AGISA). On 2nd November 2005, RS&GIS FoS Special Lecture about "NATIONAL PROGRAM OF LAND USE CHANGE MONITORING BY REMOTE SENSING IN CHINA" has delivered by Prof. Zhang Jixian at room W208, Academic Building. On 1st September 2005, a team from UNESCAP-Library, visited to RS&GIS FoS and ACRoRS building. They were welcomed by Dr. Xiaoyong Chen (RS&GIS Coordinator) and Dr. Manzul (Senior Research & Training Specialist at ACRoRS) have briefed them about the functioning of program and other data acquisition methods. A snack party was organized by RS&GIS Field of Study to thank and farewell Mr. Azfar Moid, lab supervisor. Mr. Azfar has made great contribution to the development, management and maintenance of the laboratory. Dr. Xiaoyong Chen, Prof. Kusanagi and others delivered thanks and best wishes to Mr. Azfar during the party.

On 17th August 2005, Prof. Hiromichi FUKUI from the Faculty of Policy Management, Keio University, Japan has delivered the lecture on “Digital Asia Network and Geospatial Data Mining”. RS&GIS faculty, staff and students attended the lecture, the pictures could be seen here.
New facilities of video lectures have been added to RS&GIS FoS Labs. Now more number of students can attend the lectures from any of the FoS labs. Some of the pictures are added in Facilities Page.
The orientation party for the new students was held on August 04, 2005. Before the formal orientation, Prof. Shunji Murai of University of Tokyo and Prof. Anthony Yeh of Hong Kong University have also presented their special lectures on APPLICATIONS OF AIRBORNE LASER SCANNER and INTELLIGENT GIS respectively. H. E. Prof. Xu Guan Hua, Minister, Ministry of Science and Technology, People's Republic of China and delegation visited AIT on 29th July 2005. Dr. Chen, the coordinator of RS&GIS FoS welcomed the respectable delegation to ACRoRS building and explained the working of ACRoRS and RS&GIS FoS. New President of AIT Professor Said Irandoust visited RS&GIS FoS on 12th July 2005. The Coordinator of RS&GIS Dr. Chen introduced him about the working of our FoS. Prof Jean Serra has given a special presentation on "Image Segmentation and Connection" and "Color Image Segmentation" on May 24, 2005 at RS&GIS FoS. On May 11, 2005, an open presentation for the theses was held at RS&GIS FoS for the final semester students. Dr. Kiyoshi Honda has successfully conducted the seminar on “Near Real Time Agriculture Activity Monitoring Using Multi-Temporal Modis Earth Observation Satellite Data” on April 28th and 29th, 2005 at Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand. On April 21, 2005, H.E. Mr. Vivek Katju, Ambassador of India to Thailand visited AIT and met with Prof. Mario T. Tabucanon, Acting President and Provost. He also visited the Remote Sensing & Geographic Information Systems field of study, Bioprocess Technology Laboratory, Microelectronics Laboratory, Nanotechnology Laboratory and the Library. During his visit to RS&GIS FoS, he met with the faculty members, staff and students of the FoS. Coordinator and other faculty members have given him the introduction of our FoS and briefed him about the continuing projects. A delegation from 'Pima County Community College District (West Campus)', USA led by Prof. Doug Shakel of Scienece and Technology Division paid a visit to AIT & attended a seminar on the progress research of Tsunami in Thailand on March 14, 2005. Welcome to January 2005 Students. The FoS orientation is organized at the visual lab on January 06, 2005. Dr. Chen has explained the FoS history and all the achievements. A farewell to Dr. Duan has been given on December 14, 2004. Faculty members and staff joined in together to recognize his long-term commitment to RS&GIS FoS (formerly STAR Program) and in general to AIT. Prof. Michiro Kusanagi has kindly agreed to be Acting Coordinator of RS&GIS FoS during Dr. Chen's official trip to Hangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing (P.R.China) during 12-19 October 2004.
RS&GIS FoS has organised a field trip to Hua Hin on October 9-10, 2004. Faculty, staff and students have joined this activity. During the trip, the group visited Pra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park, Pranburi Forest Park (Mangrove Park), Hua Hin beaches, Kao Sam Roi Yod National Park, Praya Nakorn Cave, etc... The International Symposium on GeoInformatics for Spatial-Infrastructure Development in Earth & Allied Sciences (GIS-IDEAS) was held in Hanoi, Vietnam on 16-18 September 2004. GIS-IDEAS Symposium in 2004 not only aimed to serve as a forum for scientific exchanges but also as a conduit for technology transfer through tutorial sessions. RS&GIS FoS has actively participated in all the events of the Symposium. Dr. Nitin Tripathi has chaired the session of "Coastal Zone and Oceanography", Dr. Honda has chaired the session of "Water Resource Management" and Dr. Ho Dinh Duan has chaired the session of "Socio-Informatics". 30 Faculty members of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, have visited RS&GIS FoS on July 14, 2004. The delegation belongs to the Faculty of Geography. Discussion was done on collaboration in Academic and Research areas between two departments. RS&GIS FoS has invited the top Vietnamese faculty members as adjunct lecturers in RS&GIS FoS. The Vietnam National University also made the same kind of proposal for our faculty members. Then the delegation has visited the labs and Geoinformatics building. STAR Program is now equipped with its own satellite transceiver for three way video conferencing. The idea is to connect Japan, Malaysia and Thailand through satellite. The basic installation and testing has been done during Jan 14-22, 2004.
