Asio Devastated Land is one of the most important historical places
in Japan where a large scale of forest destruction had taken place
because of industrial development - copper production.
A lot of effort has been made to restore the forest in ASIO

Forest classification Color Legend in this page;
   
Light brown:    Bare Land                     (RGB:203,190,175)
    Yellow:            Grassland                     (RGB:246,213,106)
    Light green:    Damaged Forest              (RGB:199,240,117)
    Green:           Slightly Damaged Forest   (RGB: 93,182, 93)
   
Dark green:    Healthy Forest                (RGB: 54,124, 108)
    White:            Cloud and Shadow            (RGB:255,255, 255)
            *RGB can be obtained from TIFF files.

*IMPORTANT NOTICE:
    The forest classification for 1992 ASTER did not go through
    the  comprehensive calibration of NDVI  range for each class.
    Also note that this data was acquired in September, while other 
    LANDSAT data in 1979 1986 and 1992 were acquired in the the end 
    of May or the beginning of June. Seasonal effect may have made
    comparability with other data to be low, mainly caused
    by phenology of forest, because most of forest in the watershed
    is deciduous forest which shows big seasonal fluctuation of NDVI
    or reflectance observed by remote sensing.
    Thus comparison of classification result in 1992 ASTER with other date
    must be considered to have certain inconsistency. 
    LANDSAT data analysis has gone through histogram matching method using
    other stable area, thus the classification results are more comparable each other.

    The analysis on ASTER was carried out for NHK program. The data was
    kindly provided by ERSDAC ( www.ersdac.or.jp ). The author would like to
    express sincere appreciation to ERSDAC.

   About False Color:
   
Remote Sensing observe near infrared ( Sekigai in Japanese ). Plants reflects
    near infrared strongly, thus this observation is suitable for monitoring plants.
    To visualize this data, we use red and we call this image as False Color Image.
     Thus plants looks red in False Color image.
